A Sign of the Times

With all the hoopla from Washington politicians these days, one has to wonder why there is any question if President Obama is promoting socialism.

By definition, Socialism is any one of the following definitions (available from Merriam-Webster):

1 : any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3 : a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

So let’s apply what we know and what we now see.

Can you list the businesses and sectors of the economy that are now being controlled by the US Government?  Fannie Mae is essentially a Government-run behemoth.  General Motors  and Chrysler.  Now, we are on the brink of an entire sector of the economy being taken over by the US Government.  That sector, of which I write, is the Health Insurance industry.

As I wrote in an earlier post, it is disingenuous for the Obama administration to claim that people can keep their insurance after the onslaught  of the ObamaCare program.  Anyone with a gram of gray matter can understand that once the US Government begins to provide health insurance, private insurance companies cannot compete and will shortly be driven out of existence.  Yes, they will go the way of the Woolly Mammoth — extinction!

How did we get into this crazy situtation?

Consider, this quote from Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 – December 19, 1968) was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America. As a candidate for President of the U. S. , Norman Thomas said, in a 1944 speech:

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism,’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.  …  I no longer need to run as a Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democratic Party has adopted our platform.”

Norman Mattoon Thomas
